Loose Ends Selectors #1 – Robotalco

Born in 1980, Sebastiano is from Vico Equense, a small town on the Gulf of Naples.

Growing up in the outskirts of Milan, dividing his time between the south and the north part of the City,
he falls in love with Hip Hop culture in the early 90s, during the so called “Golden Age”.

In 1994 he starts to buy his first rap and house records, the latter becoming his long lasting love.
Thanx to a neighbour’s turntable, the first mixtapes are about to come (cassette only), under the name Seby, and handing them out to each and every record store in Milan, felt like the natural thing to do.

Around 2008 disco music was coming back strong and the first official release, for Red Music is out. The chosen name: Club Silencio. After this, a slew of other vinyl, edits and rmxs have been released for the likes of Thisisnotanexit, Slow Motion, Tigersushi, I’m a cliché, to name a few.

In 2009 he starts a new ghost side project, that eventually will become his best and most notorious one, named Robotalco.

The sound is definitely a leap forward and leaning towards deeper vibes. As Robotalco he released music for Home taping is killing Music, On The Prowl, Seven Music, ECSTASY and many more.

Reckless digger, his music research is constantly evolving, and he can count on an incredible vinyl collection of various genres, always having a strong root in the black music scene.

Parallel to his dj and production jobs, he started a new label with some other friends and artists called Getwet, and he co- hosts a bimonthly radio show on Milan best new platform, Radio Raheem.

Who are your favourite DJ’s?

Well, there are a lot of great DJ’s out there but to sum up my main influences i can name Ricky Montanari, Master at Work, Theo Parrish & Trevor Jackson

Robotalco is a really cool name. How did you come up with it?

It sounds funny, a mispronunciation of the italian word “Borotalco” wich means Baby Powder

You have put out a lot of music. What releases do you have coming out?

I just dropped a track called “No More Disco” on a Various EP for a new cool Swedish label called Lyssna (http://bit.ly/2xDacaE) and I also have a couple of releases under my new side project “Fake Congas” (with Luca Fontaneto from Minimal Afrika) will be out soon.

What’s the clubbing scene like in Milan?

Oh that’s a tough one, well, in my opinion Milan (and Italy in general) it’s full of great dj’s & producers but there is not a real scene, i don’t know why, probably because we don’t support each other like we should and we put the whole attention on the same big DJ names, a bit boring!

What’s your favourite Italian dish/food?

Hands down, Parmigiana di Melanzane (eggplants Parmigiana)

When you’re making music what’s your favourite piece of hardware that you always go to?

I don’t use so much hardware gear in my studio too much actually but i love the gritty sampling sound so my Akai MPC i guess.

Tell me a bit about GetWet?

GetWet Music is an independent VINYL/TAPE label i co-run with some dear friends of mine, we made 6 releases and i’m very proud of our catalogue, from Boogie Disco & House Music to Experimental Jazz & Idm, check our bandcamp page – http://bit.ly/2hAMKjU – actually i’m working on the next one with Minimal Afrika, stay tuned 🙂

What track do you love the most?

Oh another difficult question, i don’t know really but recently i’ve discovered a tape called “Fruits of Zion” by “Tribe of Colin” (2015) and i love it.
